I haven't done it yet, hence the preview, but I've been looking for pattern inspirations for my rug painting project. The rug currently has a horrible 90's geometric vibe which is way too contemporary for Kyle's office. So I was looking for patterns that would fit well in a masculine old-world style room. Here are the great patterns I found:
PLAID
I think a plaid rug would make a home office look scholarly and preppy.

I'm not sold on the red but I like the idea of using a plaid pattern like this with neutral colors for a home office.

I think this pattern is reminiscent of a floral pattern but not too feminine for a man's home office.

I really like this dot grid rug from West Elm. It is geometric without the hard lines...and easy to do :)

When I googled argyle I saw these...um...pants. Could this be the new rage in chaps...Argyle Chaps, yay or nay?
