This week has been dedicated to all things Yellow Springs and I actually didn't get a chance to share my trip to Glen House Inn which was a wonderful Bed and Breakfast. Unfortunately, this September has been rather rainy and grey so we didn't get to take advantage of all of their amenities; i.e the outdoor pool, the outdoor dining area, our room's balcony and the courtyard. So, I recommend going there in the Summer for sure then you also can take advantage of all the great parks around like Glen Helen Nature Preserve. 

Don't forget that I have a contest going on here that I'll keep open till someone wins (hint: you can find all the answers within the my posts this week). I really enjoyed my couple of days in Yellow Springs. There is way more to see and do in Yellow Springs and I definitely intend on making repeat visits! SoOh Spotligh: Brian from Basho Apparel

I'm super stoked about today's spotlight because I'm featuring a shop that I've had my eye on for about 4 years. The shop is Basho Apparel, a fantastic screen printing studio based in Dayton, OH. Basho was one of the first shops I ever discovered on etsy and I was enamored with every one of their designs. During my weekend in Yellow Springs, I actually got to meet Brian in person when I stopped by their brick and mortar store. I've always enjoyed browsing through their virtual store but nothing quite beats browsing in person. For me, buying a piece of their apparel is like adding a piece of artwork to my collection of clothes. I encourage everyone to check out their store in Yellow Springs but until then, read this great feature!

Tell me a little about your shop and what you sell

Basho Apparel does all its own designing and screen printing. We sell designer T-shirts, Dresses, Sweaters, Bandannas, Hoodies, Scarves and many other types of apparel.

What is your process when you create items for your shop?

Our process is a very specialized one. Basho Apparel is an extremely eco-friendly screen printing company. We only use non-toxic water based ink that are cleaner than the standard plasticol inks used. Also, we use a method called discharge printing. This method goes in and actually redyes the fibers of the shirt, creating a much softer and durable print. There is no plastic feel to the image.

How much of what you sell is influenced by Southern Ohio?

In any art it is impossible to not be influence by your surroundings. In alot of our designs you will see this influence through native animals.

As well, Basho has recently been sponsoring other local artist on apparel. So in that sense the local artist are the inspiration.

Why did you decide to set up shop in Southern Ohio? What keeps you in Southern Ohio?

Yellow Springs is a great place to set up shop. The people are friendly and the town is very supportive of its businesses. We have been here 8 years and loved every minute.

What part of Southern Ohio do you live in and how long have you been here?

Paul Baker, the founder of Basho, has lived in Yellow Springs for 8 years.
Brian Jonson, the new marketing and sales director, has lived in Dayton for the past 5 years.

Both of these cities has great undiscovered attributes. Alot of people think there is not much to do in Dayton but I have found that if you keep your eyes open and your ear to the ground you can find more things to do than you can fit in your schedule.

What are your top 3 favorite places to eat in Southern Ohio?

What are your top 3 favorite go to events in Southern Ohio?

Cyclops Fest-A local, all handmade festival with a focus on D.I.Y.

Urban Nights-A great Downtown Dayton Event. All the stores are open late and have special events planned. Its a great time to see whats going on downtown.

Yellow Springs 4th of July Fireworks-An intimate event with just as much BANG as any urban setting.

What are your top 3 favorite places to shop/thrift in Southern Ohio?

Kismet in Yellow Springs is a great store with tons of variety. They are always getting new product in.

Feathers (Downtown Dayton)-Feathers has a ton of antique apparel, records and accessories.

Press (Downtown Dayton)-Whereas this is not a retail outlet, This is one of the best coffee experience you will ever have anywhere. Featuring pour overs, hand picked espresso and a love of coffee that is unprecedented you cannot go wrong.

Anything else you would like to share about yourself, your shop or Southern Ohio?

Southern Ohio is a great place to live, work and raise a family. The more people who get out and get active in the area, the more people will realize that.

Basho is a big part of Yellow Springs and Dayton. They recently did live screen printing at Press during Urban Nights and I couldn't go a couple steps without seeing someone wearing their shirts in Yellow Springs. Southern Ohio is a cooler place because of businesses like Basho.

 

Yellow Springs Blog Series: The Winds Cafe and Dino's Cappuccinos

As I mentioned in my last post I did get a chance to wander off through downtown Yellow Springs. It was Saturday midday and the whole area was pretty active with people walking around and visiting the many shops. When we first got into town we had lunch before the tournament. Our choice; The Winds Cafe and Bakery.

The Winds Cafe and Bakery is a great restaurant that has a bakery and wine cellar. The atmosphere feels fancy without feeling stuffy. I only had the chance to dine there so I look forward to going back to visit the wine cellar and bakery. Until I do, I think I'll save a full review and instead share these photos:

Later that day, into round 3 of the tournament, I was feeling pretty fatigued from all the vigorous card playing so I decided I needed a coffee break and low and behold I stumbled upon Dino's Cappuccinos.

The place was very low key and cool. Laid back as a coffee shop should be. I got a pumpkin spice coffee and pumpkin muffin and they were delicious. I also want to share something I'm a bit embarrassed to post...I saw Dave Chappelle. I know, I know, so very trite of me to mention. I'm not mentioning it because I was star struck either. I've only been start struck once when I saw the actor who played Liu Kang in Mortal Komabt at the D.C. Hard Rock Cafe in 12th grade and I have the Polaroid to prove it! I'm mentioning it because I did something awkward and lame. So, I've always admired Dave Chappelle for how he walked away when he felt his show was compromising his dignity and I really enjoyed his stand-up. I've read that he is a private person (like most people but unlike most entertainers) who doesn't like to sign autographs or take photos which is why he likes living in Yellow Springs because people respect that. So, for some reason I took that as I better not look at him...yeaaa, pretty dumb line of logic. So, Mr. Chappelle if you ever stumble upon this post, I owe you an apology for not giving you a kind smile when you looked my way. I was the girl with the pony bun hair. If I ever cross your path again I will smile at you like any other normal person. Whew, I feel better that I got that off my chest; thanks for indulging me. Yellow Springs Blog Series: Super-fly Comics and Games

Today is the first day of my Yellow Springs Blog Series. I'm going to start with this past weekend and work my way backwards through all the activities I got to do there.

This past weekend I had the chance to watch a revival of Magic tournaments at Super-fly Comics & Games...lucky girl...kidding aside it was actually fun. I'm not going to get into too much detail here because for one I wasn't the one playing and my Magic knowledge is limited (phew) but basically a new set(?) was released and there were over 20 people there to play with the new cards. I had originally intended to leave the shop and venture all around Yellow Springs but I was sucked into the friendly, nerdy atmosphere. I stayed for the majority of the time (but I did get to other places; more on that later). So, if you are looking for a place to nerd out on any given nerd hobby but still be social and somewhat normal, this is the place for you!

I've been to one other comic book place in Dayton. A couple of the other Magic players had been there as well and we all agreed the place in Dayton was for "serious" play and had a bit of a clique. Superfly is way more laid back and approachable; there was even a 10 year old kid (and for those who don't know Magic the card game is a pretty complicated game that most kids don't play...go figure). Chances are you will just be going in there to check out the incredible collection of comic books they have. It is very impressive. They even have a decent amount of alternative comics which I fancy at the moment. So even if comic books are not your thing, go check it out! The staff there is very firendly and helpful and if you went in explaining you know nothing about comic books they would gladly get you started on picking a few. Superfly

It was all Yellow plus Contest

Remember when Coldplay came out with this back in 2000? I was 13, watching it on MTV, and I remember thinking, "Oh yea, this is so indie"...how very different things turned out for my musical taste, MTV and Coldplay. But that's not what this post is about. The song was a trite way to introduce my exciting blog series for next week; "It Was All Yellow, a Yellow Springs Blog Series". I have done a couple of posts on this delightful area northeast of Dayton but this week I had the pleasure of spending quite a bit of time in Yellow Springs. So next week will be completely dedicated to all things Yellow Springs! Places, eats, events and a very special feature! Special because I've been a fan of this artist since '08. I've been making an effort to find go to events in Dayton and so far I've had luck finding things at Active Dayton. Not the most aesthetically pleasing website but the information is there. And because I want to be constructive with my criticism and on the off chance that anyone who matters from the site reads this, the blue type on grey is not the easiest to read and the quips at the top seem out of place and at first I thought they were comments. They aren't all that funny and definitely not useful; they just take up space that could be nice negative space for the already cluttered website. End of (what I hope is) constructive criticism.

Ok so this festival looks awesome from the few pictures I've seen at YSNews. I had to do some sleuthing to find info on the festival and the best info I could find was about last years festival at Zattana.net. Most of the info is regarding their act which happens to be belly dancing. So based on these tidbits: it starts at a bar, it may have belly dancers this year like last year, a kid wore a feather mask, jugglers were there and it is in Yellow Springs a place I've been wanting to go to...I am definitely going! I will post pics and a review of the festivities this weekend.

Review

Well I had a great time at the Dayton Street Cirque Carnival. There were jugglers, people on stilts, fire dancers, belly dancers, face painters, ice-cream and the shops along the street were open! Kyle and I were joined by two friends which made it all the more fun. It is a great place to go to as a group of friends and it is also kid-friendly. The day time was dedicated to tamer acts like the juggling (albeit they did have knives!) and the evening had more thrilling acts like the fire dancers and a circus act suspended in air (which I missed!). The music there was fun with a younger band in the day and at night it finished with a folksy jam band. I want to give a shout-out to the guy who had been on the stilts earlier in the day dancing and later was dancing on foot to the jam band. He was so full of energy and you need people like that to keep the energy so who ever you are, thanks!

Price: $-$$ (we went to Peach's Grill but they did have street food vendors)
Location: Yellow Springs; it was so quaint and rural there, I can't wait to go again!
Building: None for the carnival was outside but the shops that were open were all nice and had cute store fronts.
