SoOh Sighting: The National

I heard this song the other night and I thought I just  post the song for some general Ohio  lovebut low and behold Wikipedia tells me The National formed in Cincinnati. The lead singer Matt Beriniger has a baritone voice that is pretty alluring to say the least. Here are the lyrics. If anyone wants to comment on what they think this song means I love to get a discussion going!

Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I'll lift my shirt up
Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I'll lift my shirt up

I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees
I never married but Ohio don't remember me

Lay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too far
Lay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too far

I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
I never thought about love
When I thought about home
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
The floors are falling out from everybody I know

I'm on a bloodbuzz
Yes I am
I'm on a blood buzz
I'm on a bloodbuzz
God I am
I'm on a blood buzz

I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees
I never married but Ohio don't remember me

I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
I never thought about love
When I thought about home
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
The floors are falling out from everybody I know

I'm on a bloodbuzz
Yes I am
I'm on a blood... buzz
I'm on a bloodbuzz
God I am
I'm on a blood... buzz

  1. I always thought that was the Editors.
Alt Nation had this on all the time awhile back.

  2. I'm pretty out of touch with music so I'm not surprised this has been making the rounds well before I knew about it. I'll have to start trying to keep current on Ohio influenced music :P

Do you think Alt Nation is a good source for finding new music? I'll have to check it out.

  3. Ok so this is what I think the song means...At first I assumed there was a romantic interest because of these four lines:

"Stand up straight at the foot of your love
    I'll lift my shirt up
Lay my head on the hood of your car
    I take it too far"

    But then there's these lines:

"I never married but Ohio don't remember me
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
    I never thought about love
    When I thought about home"

So it got me thinking that maybe it's about coming home for a funeral in the family. And the person speaking might be a woman who never married but no one remembers her because it has been long since shes been there. This is supported because the lead singer's wife often helps him write lyrics (thanks wikipedia!). She also is in debt because she went to school in Ohio (which the lead singer did).

But then there is the video which I think has a lot to do with the meaning also. The man seems to be an alcoholic drifting alone. But maybe he is the person who dies in the woman's family and her bloodbuzz may be her battling with the same alcoholism in her family. OR maybe it is a man and woman singing. First part and the Bloodbuzz chorus is the man singing. And maybe it's about a break-up/death over drinking.

Then I found this interpretation here
    http://fdtate.blogspot.com/2010/05/bloodbuzz-ohio.html

"This song is about being underwater financially on his home and being in debt to the creditors to the point he will never be able to repay his loans. The writer is on a blood-buzz because the blood has been sucked out of him. He has given his creditors the shirt off of his back and his head is now an ornament on their car. He never thought about love when he thought about home is a polite way of saying that he's been f__ked in a real estate transaction along with everyone he knows, whose floors are falling out from under them."

So in short like many songs, it can mean a lot of different things to different people. I might be biased towards interpreting the person singing being a woman because I am one. Maybe this person who commented had been effected by the housing crisis. The possibilities seem endless...Anyone else want to share? :)

  4. Wow, the finance part is crazy because the man in the picture I posted on my blog was at the end of the line. Out of work and money he is living in a junk yard in a bus in a with no running water or electricity.
